My Ted talk for today:


1. Obligatory, topic-specific words:
a peer (n) /pɪə/ - coequal, associate
A person at the same status, age, etc.
  • I don't know why he criticised you in the presence of your academic peers.
  • I hope you will manage to keep pace the peers in the contest.
a catwalk (n) - walkway, footway
A platform along which models walk.
  • You cannot walk on the catwalk without a great outfit.
  • Jill has finally done her latest collection and now she thinks of which catwalk to choose.
     
pro-ana (adj) 
Encouraging an anorexia.
  • Pro-ana sites can tell you what to do in order to mislead your parents if you do not want to eat.
  • I think that most of today's world girls are affected by widespread trend of pro-ana photos.
 

to withdraw (v) - reverse, retrack
Leave a situation.
  • People often withdraw from the discussion in classes because they think it's not an obligatory.
  • There's no point in withdrawing from this project now.
 to undermine (v) - impair, frustrate, ruin
Lessen the effectiveness, often connected with self-confidence.
  • It's pretty easy to undermine Tom's self-confidence and not so easy to fix it.
  • One of my teachers used to undermine my position in the class by saying that I'm not very intelligent.
a diversity (n) - variety, difference
A range of different things.
  • Being a good politician equals having a diversity of knowledge.
  • Nowadays there is a diversity of religion.
2. The rest:
relentless (adj) - ferocious, merciless
flagrant (adj) - outrageous, shameful
image-obsessed (adj) - can't stop looking at perfect bodies and follow the diet and exercised providing that shape of body
