1. Topic-specific words:

an artifice - hoax, deceit
A thing used to deceive others.
  • In order to protect crucial victims they were transported to the Turkey while there was an artifice which caused that enemies thought that those victims were in France.
  • An artifice applied by the scientists in order to refute this common myth were fully successful.
a convention - agreement, pact
A way in which something is usually done.
  • Religion extremists have a lot of orthodox conventions which regulate for instance a woman outfit. 
  • A common convention during funeral talks is not to speak improperly about the dead.
pragmatic - down-to-earth, practical
Dealing with things sensibly and realistically.
  • My ex-boyfriend has a real pragmatic opinion about love, he says it's only for procreation purposes.
  • People believe that pragmatic attitude towards life will make them more down-to-earth.


a linguist - philologist, polyglot
A person who is familiar with languages in every aspect, especially the native one.
  • In the future I want to be a linguist to teach all of these kids proper grammar!
  • My historian used to be a kind of linguist because he demanded full correctness during our speeches.

bilingual -
A person who speaks two languages fluently.
  • My grandma is bilingual because not only can she speak French but also Turkish.
  • In order to be bilingual you have to know how to distinguish between those languages.
